Free dental care provided by the RD-Help included professional teeth cleaning, treatment of cavities at different stages, and dental fillings.
Providing dental services for children and adults from orphanages requires special considerations related to their condition and behavior.
- Many patients are unable to sit in a dental chair for long periods or follow the dentist’s instructions due to cognitive or sensory challenges. For the comfort and safety of most of these patients, treatment is performed under medical sedation. It allows the full scope of procedures to be completed in a single session without stress or pain.
- Due to insufficient daily hygiene and potential medical issues, teeth can deteriorate quickly. Advanced cavities may lead to infections that affect overall health and immunity. For this reason, sometimes it is better to extract a tooth or choose simpler methods to preserve its function rather than undertake complex and lengthy treatments.
- Dentists typically combine hygiene, cavity treatment, fillings, endodontics, and extractions in one session to minimize stress and the number of visits. The involvement of multiple specialists — including the dentist, anesthesiologist, dental assistants, and representatives from the orphanage or care facility — is essential.
- Access to dental care significantly improves patients’ quality of life: it reduces pain, supports better nutrition, enables smiling, and allows them to carry out everyday activities. It also reflects the care and attention of society and charitable organizations toward children and adults who are often left without proper support.
We believe that caring for the dental health of children and adults left without care and with autism spectrum disorders, Down syndrome or cerebral palsy is just as important as other areas of social support. Free dental care aims not only to treat teeth but also to preserve quality of life.
